Medical Dermatology

We provide comprehensive medical skin care, helping each patient achieve radiance and health. Our goal is to be there for you and your loved ones year after year. Whether it is a new rash, a skin cancer, or a chronic skin problem, we are here. During your appointment, dermatologist Dr. Bonnie Furner will perform a thorough evaluation of your skin to properly diagnose and treat any skin problems you may have.

Total Skin Exam

We perform full body skin exams at the request of all our patients. This is your time to discuss any concerns you have about different spots on your skin, both benign and potentially cancerous. We want to help you understand your skin conditions and optimally care for your skin. Who should get screened? Everyone!

At your evaluation we may discuss conditions caused by a combination of your genetics, your sun exposure, and your age. Common skin findings include sun spots or liver spots (lentigo), wisdom spots (seborrheic keratosis), dilated blood vessels (telangectasias),  cherry angiomas, skin discoloration (poikiloderma or melasma),  and precancerous lesions (actinic keratosis).

Skin cancer screening, prevention, and treatment is a major part of our medical dermatology services in San Antonio, TX. Malignant skin cancers such as melanoma, basal cell carcinoma, and squamous cell carcinoma are generally treated with surgery, but in more severe cases, additional therapies may be necessary. Dr. Furner is a surgical dermatologist who has the experience and expertise to provide complete skin cancer care, right here in San Antonio.

Our board-certified dermatologist can discuss each diagnosis and treatment options available at your visit.

Removal of Lesions

Moles or “beauty marks” are usually harmless, but should be monitored for changes and the development of melanoma. They can be present at birth or develop over time. Any new or changing moles should be evaluated. Other reasons for mole removal include unsightly appearance, unfavorable locations, or frequent trauma from clothing, seatbelts, shaving, etc.

Skin tags, wisdom spots, and cysts can also be safely removed in our office. These are considered harmless but are often removed because they can become irritating, continue to grow, or be cosmetically bothersome.

Skin Rashes

Reactions on the skin can be caused by skin allergy (such as poison ivy), new skin care products, dry skin, eczema, psoriasis, and many other conditions. It is important to know what kind of rash you have and the treatment options you have. Do not suffer through another itchy, red day.

Viral, Bacterial, and Fungal Infections

Our dermatologists battle skin infections on a daily basis with education, prescription medications, and, if needed, surgical removal or destruction. Common skin infections include warts (human papilloma virus or HPV), cold sores, herpes, molluscum contagiosum, fungus of hair, nail, and skin, impetigo, and cellulitis.

Hair Loss

While daily shedding is normal, people who notice their hair shedding in large amounts after combing or brushing, or whose hair becomes thinner or falls out, should consult a dermatologist for proper diagnosis and treatment.

Acne Treatment

Acne can take the form of blackheads, whiteheads, cysts and nodules. Our practice incorporates topical medications, antibiotics, Accutane®, chemical peels, microdermabrasion, and more to customize your treatment. Acne can be both physically and emotionally scarring for those affected. Fortunately, Dr. Furner can customize your care.

Rosacea

Rosacea is a chronic skin disease that causes redness and swelling on the face, scalp, neck, ears, chest, back and/or eyes. Symptoms range from red pimples, lines and visible blood vessels to dry or burning skin and a tendency to flush easily. It is not yet known what causes rosacea and the disease is not curable, although it can be treated with topical creams, oral medications, or laser therapy.

Hyperhidrosis

Hyperhidrosis is a rare condition that causes excessive sweating on the hands, feet, armpits, face, genital area, or all over the entire body. Treatment for hyperhidrosis depends on the severity of the condition, but may include prescription-strength antiperspirant or medication to help control sweating or stop the stimulation of the sweat glands. BOTOX® injections in the armpits block the nerves that cause sweating and can effectively treat hyperhidrosis for up to eight months for each injection. In severe cases, surgery may be required to remove the nerves that control the sweat glands, or the actual glands themselves.

Skin Care

Dr. Furner will also discuss preventative and routine skin care options with you. She will share extensive knowledge with you about how to care for your skin on a daily basis and recommend the best products to help you maintain fresh, healthy, and glowing skin all year round.
